Cryogenic_LgBiological, medical, pharmaceutical, and other scientific laboratories often require deep levels of cold for their work, which means they also require the best freezer labels possible to label their equipment, samples, and long-term storage items. Did you know that all biological activity stops at -136˚ C (-213˚ F)? That makes liquid nitrogen, at -196˚ C (-321˚ F), a perfect medium for storing biological materials in the long term, from skin samples to complete cadavers.

At the moment, cryogenic labels are most used more often to label genetic materials and embryos for fertility clinics, as well as for blood and tissue samples. As you can imagine, these deep freeze labels have to be especially rugged. Ink aside, the glue has to be a special blend of emulsion adhesive with a very high tack, no matter how low the temperature. If the freezer labels deaden and fall off in these situations, the results can be catastrophic. They’ll also need to stick to a range of materials that can handle such cold, including steel, glass, Plexiglass, and other special plastics.

Cryogenic labels also require sturdy base materials, usually white vinyl, though coated paper may be sufficient. Most cryogenic labs don’t need nearly the depth of cold that liquid nitrogen requires, so the normal service range for our white vinyl freezer labels is usually from about -94˚ to 194˚ F, though they can also handle dry ice, too, at -112˚ F. This makes those particular frozen labels handy for anything that needs to be shipped cross-country in a couple of days along with a hunk of frozen CO2—for example, a nice half-gallon of your favorite rare ice cream. The ice cream label might fail between here and there, hence the need for extra cryogenic labels.
